专利说明:
[1" class="description-paragraph] MULTIFUNCTION PAINT TRAY The present invention relates to accessories useful in painting and more particularly, relates to a multi functional versatile paint tray.Trays designed to accept paint for use with applicator rollers are well known in the art and have been used for a number of years. The trays are used to hold the paint while the paint is applied to the roller. Generally, such trays have a shallow end and a deeper end with a sloping section leading from the shallow end to the deeper end. When the tray is placed on a level substrate, the paint will remain in the deep end which allows the user to put the roller into the deep end and then roll the roller along the sloped section of the paint tray which will remove any excess paint. Generally, this type of paint tray has now gained universal acceptance and is widely available either in metal or plastic. When painting, one must frequently also use a brush for smaller areas and for corners and the like. Normally, the brush is merely dipped into the paint in the deep end and then the brush is laid on a surface.One weakness associated with the use of such paint trays is their inability to be used in any manner except on a flat horizontal substrate. Frequently, the painter is required to mount a ladder to reach some of the surfaces. In such instances, the only option has been to use a pole which mounts into the end of the handle of the paint roller.It would therefore be desirable to have a paint tray which is useable with brushes and/or can be used in different orientations. According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a paint tray comprising a bottom wall, first and second side wails, first and second end wails, each side wall extending from the first end wall to the second end wall, each of the side wails having a greater height adjacent the first end wall than the height adjacent the second end wall, a top wall extending between the first and second side wails and the first end wails to define a cavity having an opening facing the second end wails, and a support member extending downwardly from the bottom wall adjacent the second end wall such that when the tray is placed on a level substrate, an upper surface of the bottom wall slopes downwardly from the second end wall towards the first end wall.According to a further aspect of the present invention there is provided a paint tray comprising a bottom wall, first and second side wails, first and second end wails, a cover hingedly secured to the first end wall, the cover having first and second cover side wails abutting the first and second paint tray side wails respectively, and an upper wall extending between the cover side wails such that when the cover is in a closed position, there is defined a cavity having an opening facing the second end wall, and a support member extending downwardly from the bottom wall adjacent the second end wall such than when the tray is placed on a level substrate, an upper surface of the bottom wall slopes downwardly from the second end wall towards the first end wall.The multifunction paint tray may be formed of any material such as a plastic or metal material. In one embodiment, the paint tray is preferably formed of a plastic
[2" class="description-paragraph] -2-material which permits the hinging of the cover. In a preferred embodiment, the paint tray is provided with a pair of flanges extending inwardly from the support member. The pair of flanges will define a recess which is sized to receive a ladder step or the like as will be discussed in greater detail hereinbelow.Also, in a preferred embodiment, the paint tray will include a paint brush receptacle which is removably mounted on the paint tray. Any suitable means for mounting the same such as a clip may be employed.The tray may also conveniently include one or more handles for transporting the same.For use on ladders when the tray is in a generally vertical orientation, there are provided a pair of hooks, one on each of the side walk to stabilize the tray. Having thus generally described the invention, reference will be made to the accompanying drawings illustrating embodiments thereof, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a multifunction paint tray according to the present invention; Figure 2 is a side elevational view thereof;Figure 3 is a top plan view thereof; Figure 4 is a sectional view taken along the lines 4-4 of Figure 3;
[3" class="description-paragraph] -3-Figure 5 is a side view illustrating the positioning of the multifunction paint tray on a ladder;Figure 6 is a perspective view illustrating the positioning of the multifunction tray on a ladder;Figure 7 is a side elevational view showing the use of the multifunction paint tray on a stool or step ladder;Figure 8 is a perspective view of a further embodiment of a multifunction paint tray and; Figure 9 is a sectional view taken along the lines 9-9 of Figure 8.Referring to the drawings in greater detail and by reference characters thereto, there is illustrated in Figure 1 a first embodiment of a multifunction paint tray which is generally designated by reference numeral 10. Paint tray 10 is defined by a bottom wall 12, a first side wall 14, an opposed second side wall 16, a first end wall 18, and a second opposed end wall 20.First end wall 18, bottom wall 12 and first and second side walk 14 and 16 respectively define a paint receiving section generally designated by reference numeral 24. From second end wall 20, bottom wall 12 slopes downwardly in a conventional arrangement. In this section, bottom wall 12 has raised surface portions in the form of chevrons 28.
[4" class="description-paragraph] -4-Adjacent first end wall 18 and paint receiving section 24, it will be seen that first side wall 14 has a first upper side wall portion 32 while second side wall 16 has a second upper side wall portion 34. Extending between first upper side wall 32 and second upper side wall 34 is a top wall 36, walls 32, 34 and 36 defining a cavity having an opening facing the second end wall 20.In the embodiments of Figures 1 to 7, there is also provided a handle 40 secured to second end wall 20.Adj acent second end wall 20 there is provided a support member 44 to raise the end such that portion 26 of bottom wall 12 slopes downwardly as previously described.Support member 44 is formed with an end wall 46 which continues downwardly from second end wall 20. Extending inwardly are first and second flange members 48 and 50 respectively. Defined between flanges 48 and 50 is a recess 52. Mounted within tray 10 adjacent second end wall 20 are first and second paint roll retaining members 54 and 56.Members 54 and 56 are designed to receive and retain the roller portion 72 of a paint roller 70 as illustrated in phantom outline. Paint roller 70 has a conventional handle 74. Located on first upper side wall portion 32 is a pivotable hook 60. A similar arrangement is provided on second upper side wall 34 which has a hook member 62 for reasons which will become apparent hereinbelow.The multifunction paint tray also includes a paint brush receptacle 64 which is retained on second side wall 16 by means of a clip 66. Paint brush receptacle 64 is
[5" class="description-paragraph] -5-designed to receive a paint brush 76.In use, multifunction paint tray 10 may initially serve as a conventional paint tray when in the position shown in Figure 1 - i.e. paint tray 10 is placed on a level substrate surface. Paint brush receptacle 64 is retained on second side wall 16 by means of clip 66 and thus there is provided a storage place for paint brush 76.As shown in Figure 7, paint tray 10 may also be used in conjunction with a ladder or stool S by means of recess 52 between flanges 48 and 50.As shown in Figures 5 and 6, paint tray 10 may also be used in conjunction with a ladder L having rails R. Thus, the paint tray 10 is positioned such that a first rail R fits between flanges 48 and 50 in recess 52 while hooks 60 and 62 are used to engage a lower rail R. In this arrangement, the paint is retained in the cavity defined by upper wall 36, end wall 18 and first and second side walls 14 and 16 respectively. When in this position, sloping section 26 is still available to remove excess paint from the paint roller.Also, paint brush receptacle 64 can be clipped on one of first upper side wall 32, second upper side wall 34, or top wall 36.A second embodiment of the multifunction paint tray is illustrated in Figures 8 and 9 and reference will now be made thereto. Multifunction paint tray 10' in Figure 8 has many of the same components and thus similar reference numerals are employed and are not described in detail herein. Paint tray 10' has a cover generally designated by reference numeral 82 and which is connected by a hinge 84 to a first end wall 18. Cover
[6" class="description-paragraph] -6-82 is, when compared to the embodiment of Figure 1 formed of first upper side wall 32, second upper side wall 34, top wall 36 and an upper portion of first end wall 18.Preferably, the paint tray 10 is formed of a plastic material and the plastic material itself will function as hinge 84. As shown in Figure 9, second upper side wall 34 sits within the lower portion of second side wall 16 by means of a tenon 86 and mortice 88 arrangement. Hook 62 is secured to the outside wall by means of attachment screw 90.In the embodiment of Figure 8, support member 44 is hingedly connected to first side wall 14 and second side wall 16. Screws 92 may be used to attach support member 44 thereto. A handle (not shown) may be secured to end wall 46.It will be understood that the above described embodiments are for purposes of illustration only and that changes and modifications may be made thereto without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
